When planning a tropical getaway within the U.S., the Florida Keys are the obvious choice. A trip to the Keys might initially entail the thought of visiting Key West, but luckily the Keys expand farther than that for people who aren’t fans of busy beach cities. There are actually dozens of keys to choose from, some smaller than others. Here are five of the most intimate hotels to help you plan your tropical getaway in the Keys, without the crowds or the hustle and bustle.
1. Wilderness Joins the Ocean
Get the best of two worlds, including a sandy white beach and tropical forest when you book a stay at the Ocean Pointe Suites at Key Largo. The tropical forest surrounding the resort is protected and secluded from everything and everyone. Enjoy the private beach where you can go fishing and explore shipwrecks under the sea. As an added attraction, you are only an 11-mile drive from the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, where there’s even more nature and water to explore.
2. Luxury and Entertainment
One of the smallest keys, Little Torch Key, is home to a great hotel secret, the Little Palm Island Resort Spa: A Noble House Resort. Celebrities and even some previous U.S. presidents have stayed here. The longer your stay, the more inexpensive it will become. Don’t miss out on the full-service spa, SpaTerre, where treatments and services reach the exotic level. Book a ritual bath experience or check out their massage journeys. For a special entertainment night, get tickets to a Sandbar Session and see a Grammy-winning musician perform.
3. Boating at its Best
Stay on Florida’s west coast at the Resort at Longboat Key Club for a remarkable view of the Gulf of Mexico. A sunset boat ride is a must for every visitor. The resort expands over 410 acres, and includes its own beach, private marina, and boardwalk, plus eight restaurants and lounges for entertainment.
4. Grand Beach Houses
Choose from a single-level guest room or one of the 87 beach houses offered at Tranquility Bay Beachfront Hotel and Resort in Marathon. Houses include up to three bedrooms, along with beachfront access and luxurious amenities. Spend your days on the 2.5 acres of sandy beach, relax in the three pools, and grab a snack at the tiki bar or Butterfly Cafe.
5. Recreation at its Fullest
When looking for a long list of recreational activities to choose from, Marco Beach Ocean Resort offers up the most options. Right on-site you can book parasailing excursions, and there are also nearby options for waterskiing, boat tours, and charter fishing. You can rent a bike to explore the surrounding area, but this hotel has enough to offer that you may not want to leave.
When visiting the Florida Keys, look beyond the popular choices. Staying on a smaller, secluded key will bring you more intimacy, there will be fewer people and smaller crowds, and there’s a higher level of personal catering.
