Florida, in general, is one of my favorite destinations in the world. I have traveled to many parts of the state but have only visited the Florida Keys once.
As I am reminiscing about the road trip I took last year, my memories took me back to the first day of the trip in Key Largo. I and the hubby took an early flight and arrived in Miami around 10am. After picking up the car rental, we were at our hotel in Key Largo by 11am. It is only a 55 minute ride in no traffic. The sun was out, the roads were clear, and I happened to find this cute cottage hotel on the beach the day before!
Sunset Cove Beach Resort
There are so many hotels to choose from, and Airbnb options, in Key Largo that I had a hard time deciding where I wanted to stay. Many are on the beach facing west and Key Largo is bigger than many of the other keys.
I ultimately decided on Sunset Cove Beach Resort. This resort is made up of 10 cottages/suites spread out on the grounds along with space for reserved RV parking and 3 diver dens. The grounds are small and cozy. Even though the resort if off the Main Road US 1 Highway, there are many trees and plants which give it a garden-like feel and block the view of the main road. Once you enter, it is as if you are in a secluded island.
What blew me away was the beach at this resort. It is calm water with perfectly clear visibility. Easy to walk into and go for a swim, I was in the ocean a lot. There is a dock to the left where snorkeling is great and you will see many fish. Boats are able to dock for a fee although I only saw one during my stay.
The beach is where the party is at. When I arrived at 11am, there already were guests drinking, sunbathing, and having a good time. All the guests ended up hanging out together which I never experienced. Literally, we sat in a huge group whether we were 20 years old or 70 or in between. It was a very special time and everyone was so friendly. Don’t miss the sunsets.
Guests get complimentary breakfast daily which includes fresh pastries, coffee, and juice. The beach is an amenity alone where you can enjoy free paddle boarding, canoeing, and kayaking. The rooms come with microwaves and refrigerators. Mostly, we would run out to the store across the road for alcohol and stock it in our rooms. Since the grounds are small, it is so easy to bring anything you need to the beach or go back to your room to grab an item.
Another great thing is that some of the rooms are pet-friendly. Just call to confirm before you book your room!
The Sunset Cove Beach Resort is located in central Key Largo. Next door are two bars which offer outdoor dining, live music, and huge menus – Bayside Grille and Sunset Bar and Snook’s Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki. Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen offers great lunch along with a sandwich shop across the road. CVS Pharmacy is located across US 1 for daily needs as well as an Auto Parts store if you need help with your car. Driving to anywhere is close and easy.
Prices are very reasonable for this resort and what they offer. Diver dens are the least expensive at $135 a night. Other cottages begin at $150 per night and range up to $220 the most depending on the size and if it is a waterfront location.
