Fire Island is the ultimate party destination in NY, away from the city.
If you have not heard of Fire Island, I am not surprised. Many visitors tend to only find out about it through friends or through someone who has been there before. About a 3 hour trip from the city, it is not the best spot for a day trip. Best for a weekend trip or having a house/ boat to crash on, that is the hardest part when it comes to planning a Fire Island getaway. The rest is all easy once you are there.
Here are the best spots to party at in Fire Island:
Also referred to as “OB”, Ocean Beach is the most known. Ferries come to OB every 30 minutes from Bayshore and the fun starts there on the boats. If you can, join a boat party. Many come just to have others come onto their boat and be entertained.
Start off at Magguire’s for lobster specials and Mermaid’s for Rocket Fuels – the islands’ famous drink.
There are more than 20 bars within the OB area which makes bar hopping easy. This is the place to go on a weekend or at night. Many other neighborhoods do not have nightlife or it’s a row of house parties.
If you want to see shows and performances live with a LGBT community head to Cherry Grove. Everyone is welcome and don’t miss the drag shows and themed parties at Cherry’s. Hang at the outdoor deck at Ice Palace and attend the Sunday T-dance. Nightlife and boozy brunches are plenty. There actually is more going on here in the day than in OB.
Ocean Bay Park
A neighboring spot only 20 minutes away from OB, Ocean Bay Park has a great mix of quiet and bars. Mostly residential, there are three main bars which stay super busy in the day into the sunset. Head to Hurricane Bar near the beach to sip on cool cocktails. On the bay, Flynn’s has DJ’s who keep the party going and Schooner Inn is great for anyone who just wants a bar in general. Bring your dancing shoes.
