If you are visiting Rio de Janeiro, the one attraction you cannot miss is Christ the Redeemer.
As you may have seen in many photos, the statue stands on top of a hill overlooking Rio. It is 98 feet tall and it attracts thousands of visitors per day.
*New Fact – It is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
When it comes to booking your ticket and choice of getting to Christ the Redeemer, it is confusing. I had to read many forums, blog posts, and articles to figure out the many ways one can get to it. In the end, I waited until I was in Rio to decide what would work best for me.
Luckily, I ran into a girl from California who had been staying in Rio for a month and she suggested I take the van from Copacabana Beach. I was traveling with a good friend of mine and after some sightseeing in Lapa, we decided the van was the best way to go.
It definitely was. Here is the best, and cheapest, way to get to Christ the Redeemer.
*You do not need to purchase tickets beforehand either! Just walk over whenever you like.
Taking the Van from Copacabana Beach to Christ the Redeemer
In Copacabana Beach, head over to the ticketing and van station located on Rua Belfort Cristo and the corner of Av. Nossa Sra. de Copacabana. If you walk down the beach, turn up that block, you will see what looks like a park area with benches. The ticket office appears to be a booth by the gate when you walk into the park area. You purchase your tickets there and on the other side of the booth is the waiting area for the buses. The map above does not show the park exactly, but is a good guideline for the location. I initially passed the booth and everyone on the street directed me to it easily.
Price: Per person is only 57 Reals. This converts to about $17 US Dollars or $16 Euros. The price includes everything – van transportation to and from the statue and admission to the statue. You do not need to purchase anything else! Food, drinks, souvenirs are of course out of your own pocket.
Vans: They usually come every 20 minutes. Drop off is the same location. They have other pick up and drop off locations within Rio. Check the website below to confirm.
*Tip: Go early in the morning to avoid crowds. I went near 3pm and it began to get a bit hazy as well. While there will always be others around, it still is an experience of a lifetime.
